Here is the reality: Security in the West Bank continues to hang by a thread.
Palestinian forces cannot maintain security control on their own. If it were not for nightly Israeli raids in search of terror cells, it is an open question whether Abbas would be able to maintain power in the face of a growing challenge from Hamas.
As for Gaza, Hamas rule has transformed the Strip into what is perhaps the world's No. 1 terrorist statelet. Given these realities, it is unclear precisely what Secretary of State Rice hopes to achieve with her latest visit.

Rice hopes to accomplish here what the Bush Administration has done for Iraq: Foster terrorism, invite Al-Qaeda in and empower Iran. Since Israel, American Conservatives and indeed many Jews patted Bush on the back and told him he was doing a good job, as he ineptly waged his war on terrorism, failing miserably, but seeming to kill enough Iraqi Muslims to make them all happy, Bush and Rice believed everyone wanted more of the same. It is disingenuous that the Washington Times, ultra-conservative tabloid that it is, so supportive of Bush for so many years, now has the nerve to ask what Rice hopes to accomplish. She expects to bring her Administration's brand of ineptitude like a cauterizing flame across the entire MidEast, creating the kind of lasting peace and hope they have brought to so many, like the 100,000 dead Iraqis, and the Afghans who cannot speak their mind in public because of the resurgent Taliban. This is Bush and Cheney and Rice's Middle East. After all, why should their Middle East do any better than their America has done?
