The Economics of Hatred

A Nation of Holocaust Deniers? - Azadeh Moaveni

Most Iranians don't share Ahmadinejad's anti-Israel worldview. They have no blood feud with Israel, and would cheerfully accept better relations if it meant their daily lives would improve.

Iranians are no dummies. Millions of middle-class Iranians travel to Turkey on vacation and see the shiny cars, international banks, and consumer bounty that come along with a policy of accommodation. They want that for themselves. Sadly, their government wants to share its bounty with Hizballah.

This may or may not be the case. Iran elected a more conservative president than they had last time. They do not revolt against the hard line mullahs that really run their country. It is a nice thought to believe the majority would like things to be different. But we keep placing our Western ideals on these middle eastern minds that do not think as we do. We should have seen this from our tours of the middle eat where educated young women said they did not want the lives of western women and how everyone has taken Iraqi democracy and run it into the ground, unfortunately and preferably on top of each other, it would seem.
